Pastor Anthony's Notes

01.01.2008

Dear friends,
This weekend, Katherine will be visiting her father in Wisconsin. You know what that means... I am on Jack-duty! Yes, it's going to be a father-and-son weekend of pizzas, sodas, paper-plates and all the action movies two boys can handle. Well, maybe Jack's still a little too young for
that, but it will still be a great "guy-bonding" weekend.

And, so that I may fully give my entire attention to Jack, I will not be at church this Sunday. Don't worry about me, though, I will be saying plenty of prayers while Katherine is gone... in fact, I bet Katherine will be saying an unusually large number of prayers while she's gone too!

Nonetheless, although I will be absent, this will definitely be a Sunday you won't want to miss. Rev. Carol Armstrong-Moore will be leading us in Preaching and Communion. She has preached for us several times in the past and has always been inspiring and thought-provoking. Many of our members remember her fondly and are excited about hearing her again. Please offer her a warm welcome and our famous Light of Hope hospitality.

Three days later, on Wednesday, February 6th, we will celebrate Ash Wednesday with worship at 7pm. This will be our very first Ash Wednesday service ever for our church since we now have our own space to host it!  Join us for this reflective service to prepare us for the season of Lent.

"What is Lent?" you ask. Lent is the season of forty days (not counting Sundays which are to be considered mini-Easters) prior to Easter when we remember the forty days Jesus prepared for his ministry in the desert/wilderness. It is a season of preparation, prayer, self-denial, repentance (i.e., turning from sin) and/or fasting. What's more, in accordance with an ancient tradition, we will also fast from singing
"Alleluias" until they break forth again on Easter morning. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and is remembered through reflection and the receiving of ashes on our foreheads as a sign of repentance. I hope you will join us for this moving experience.

See you then,
Pastor Anthony
